Hello Music Lovers!
Welcome to Caroline’s Corner. This is the where I will be talking about the newest metal/hard rock releases. I will also be reviewing any shows that I attend. Sometimes I may go off track a bit and review something that might not be metal but it’s my corner and I can do what I want to do. Also from time to time I may reach back into the vault and blow the dust off some metal classics.
For my first review I have chosen Angel of Babylon by Avantasia (released on Nuclear Blast). When I picked this up I had not heard of this project and had no idea that this was part of a rock opera series. The cover art and titles of the songs led me to this purchase. While each song on the CD can easily stand on its own; the sequence of the CD leaves the listener wanting to hear the next track to and the progression of the story.
Tobias Sammet (of Edguy) is the frontman and songwriter for the project and has enlisted the talents of several other musicians including Jorn Lande (Yngwie Malmsteen), Russell Allen (Symphony X), Eric Singer (KISS), Bruce Kulick (KISS) Michael Kiske (Helloween).
Jon Oliva of Savatage, Jon Oliva’s Pain and TSO is also part of this project. Jon Oliva is one of the most overlooked musical talents and to hear his voice on this CD made me even more of a fan.
Songs like Your Love is Evil, Down in the Dark and the title track highlight the musicianship which makes this something that fans of metal and rock operas should go out and get. Pick up Scarecrow and the Wicked Symphony so that you can experience the full scope of the Avantasia experience.
Until next time …horns up \m/
