The organizers of Record Store Day are bringing a slew of exclusive releases to Birdland for the upcoming “Back to Black Friday” promotion on November 26. The day after Thanksgiving is traditionally the busiest shopping day of the year and has become something of a pop culture event.
Here are some of the “Back to Black Friday” releases that will be available November 26:
– Scala and Kolacny Brothers, signed to Rhino Entertainment imprint ATCO Records, will release a limited-edition EP. The group is perhaps best known for its cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” that is heard in the trailer for the film “The Social Network.” Read more...
Buddy Guy proudly announces himself as “74 Years Young” at the outset of his latest album, Living Proof. But the guitar legend still plays with the energy of a teenager-albeit a highly talented one-just starting out. And when he gets his dander up on such tracks as “Too Soon” and “Let the Door Knob Hit Ya,” Guy can still diss like a street gangsta. He plays and sings with biting ferocity on “Thank Me Someday,” “Key Don’t Fit,” “Guess What” and the album-closing instrumental “Skanky,” fronting a band that includes former Double Trouble keyboardist Reese Wynans and David Grissom on second guitar. The track “On the Road,” with the Memphis Horns, and “Everybody’s Got to Go” explore more soulful flavors. And Guy’s collaboration with Carlos Santana, “Where the Blues Begins,” is dark, snaky and unlike any of the album’s other 11 tracks. “Stay Around a Little Longer,” meanwhile, pairs Guy and fellow stalwart B.B. King in the studio for the first time, resulting in a friendly if somewhat understated celebration of their durability.
The brand new album from Guster featuring the single “Do You Love Me”. Pop quiz, no cheating: name a band that, fifteen years on, is operating at the absolute peak of its creative powers, making the most inspired, timeless music and playing to the largest audiences of its career? The answers don’t come easily, but we have one: Guster. Read more...
The first thing that strikes you about Kings of Leon’s fifth album, Come Around Sundown, is the sheer musical diversity of its songs, which touch on everything from gospel (spiritual, up-tempo rocker “Radioactive”), angular post-punk (“The Immortals,” “Pony Up”), bonafide country (“Back Down South”), and even ’50s-style doo-wop (“Mary”). The album’s huge range proves that Kings of Leon haven’t lost the restless, experimental nature that has made them such an exciting band to watch. Read more...
Seven years after the announcement of their creative break, the original members of prog rock supergroup TRANSATLANTIC — Roine Stolt (THE FLOWER KINGS), Pete Trewavas (MARILLION), Neal Morse(ex-SPOCK’S BEARD) and Mike Portnoy (DREAM THEATER) — got together again and recorded a new studio album titled “The Whirlwind”, which went on to be TRANSATLANTIC‘s best-selling album, entering mainstream charts in the U.S., Germany and Netherlands. Their two seminal albums, tours and DVDs redefined prog’s artistic and commercial possibilities with a combination of modern and traditional prog, classic pop sensibilities, and mind-blowing musicianship.
The An Evening With Transatlantic Whirld Tour 2010 was the group’s largest tour, covering both sides of the Atlantic across 11 countries. With the addition of PAIN OF SALVATION‘s Daniel Gildenlöwon guitar and keyboards, it was also their most musically powerful. On May 21, 2010, at Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London, the cameras were rolling. Read more...

is the debut from The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger (Sean Lennon & Charlotte Kemp Muhl) on their own homegrown label Chimera Music. Like a chimera itself – a mythical two-headed creature – The G.O.A.S.T.T. work from one heart despite having two separate minds. Acoustic Sessions shows their love of quirky and whimsical ’60s folk pop, reminiscent at times of Syd Barrett, Incredible String Band and Simon & Garfunkel. G.O.A.S.T.T. weaves narratives around a metaphysical geography of their own devising, finding a surrealist beauty in the mundane. Like Dali’s imaginary landscapes, G.O.A.S.T.T.’s world is a beguiling Wonderland and one stunning debut album.
Darius Rucker signed with Capitol Records Nashville in 2007 and has since been embraced by the country music community with his chart-topping 2008 debut, Learn to Live — an album that has produced three consecutive No. 1 singles and the Top 5 hit, “History In The Making.” Rucker’s transition has been highly praised, with The New York Times proclaiming he has “one of the year’s most vibrant country albums.” Rucker’s success in the country music format was recently recognized at the 43rd Annual CMA Awards when he received the Top New Artist title and again with an ACM Award nomination in the Top Male Vocalist of the Year category. Rucker’s follow-up to Learn to Live titled Charleston, SC 1966 — a title which pays tribute to one of Rucker’s biggest influences, Radney Foster. Rucker’s latest single, “Come Back Song,” from his forthcoming record is racing up the charts.
Produced by T Bone Burnett, The Union marks the culmination of a mutual musical adoration that began in the late 1960s, ahead of Elton’s debut US performance in 1970 at The Troubadour Club in Los Angeles. The album is a collaboration between Elton and Leon Russell, with songs by Elton and Bernie Taupin; by Elton, Bernie and Leon; by Elton and Leon and by Leon alone.
The Union was recorded in Los Angeles earlier this year, with guest musicians including Brian Wilson, Booker T, Don Was and Neil Young. Cameron Crowe has filmed the sessions for a documentary, creating too a moment of history as this is the first time that the genesis of Elton’s music has been recorded on film. Critics who have had an early preview of the album are united in praise for the work that Elton describes as a “Seventies record with a modern feel.”
General Norman Johnson, who as lead singer of the soul group the Chairmen of the Board had a Top 10 hit with “Give Me Just a Little More Time,” has died. He was 67.
Johnson died Wednesday at his home in Atlanta, said band member Ken Knox. No cause was given.
Also a songwriter and producer, Johnson wrote ”Patches,”which was a Top 10 hit for Clarence Carter. Johnson also wrote songs that became hits for such artists as Honey Cone and Freda Payne.
“Give Me Just a Little More Time” was the Chairmen of the Board’s first single in 1970 and featured Johnson’s expressive delivery that Knox described as “unmistakably unique.” Read more...
